About Nik Szymanek

Nik Szymanek is an amateur astronomer based in North Essex, England. He is a keen astronomical photographer and regularly travelled to La Palma and Hawaii to take advantage of the dark skies to take images which have appeared in prestigious magazines such as Astronomy Now, Sky & Telescope, The Sky at Night, Astronomy and others.

Back in the UK, Nik is a frequent supplier of high-quality images to magazines, websites and book publishers and has appeared on the BBC’s “The Sky at Night”, “Inside Out” and “Final Frontier” astronomy programmes. Other interests include lecturing to astronomical, photographic and science societies.

In July 2004 he travelled to Berkeley, California, to receive the prestigious Astronomical Society of the Pacific’s Amateur Achievement Award for 2004.

Nik has written three books on astronomical photography, ‘Infinity Rising’, designed to help people starting out in photographing the night sky and ‘Shooting Stars’ and ‘Shooting Stars II’ which are more advanced imaging books. He writes a monthly ‘Masterclass’ imaging column in Astronomy Now magazine which covers all aspects of modern deep sky astrophotography.

With a well-equipped back-garden observatory, Nik is able to take high quality images of the night sky from near Colchester but also uses a second astrophotography observatory located under the dark skies of south-eastern Spain for remote imaging.

Since 2020, Nik has been an Ambassador and Tutor for the Telescope Live remote imaging platform which has professional level telescopes and imaging cameras at prime dark sky sites in Chile, Australia and Spain, giving access to southern hemisphere targets.
