Matt Cooke began his Photographic career in 1987 after graduating from renowned Bournemouth College of Art, his first commercial shoot undertaken two weeks after leaving for Fast Lane magazine.

His career blossomed through the 90’s and into the 21st century photographing for car magazines, F1 magazine, New Scientist, and Sunday supplements as well as developing a career working with design agencies and advertising agencies, specialising in portraiture, automotive, corporate communications and advertising both nationally and internationally.

Being handy with lighting and a camera has taken him around the world, and inside the workings of a diverse array of businesses and places to meet a variety of interesting people, often in flashy cars trying to make it fun for all along the way.

I’ve been taking photographs for many years now. I originally focused mostly on macro photography of flowers, and then expanded to include landscape and portraits.

I shoot with a Sony A7rIII and Zeiss lenses, and also with a Leica. There is a lot of enjoyment wrapped up with the kit – it’s that blokey geeky equipment thing. But the real pleasure of photography is that it forces me to slow down and really look. That’s never easy in our rushed world, so a chance to stop, look and see is truly valuable. I hope the pictures convey that in some small way.

About Nick Akers ARPS BPE4*

Nick is a retired corporate communication and marketing manager having worked in senior positions in the telecommunications and energy industries. He lives in Norfolk.

He has been making pictures for 50 years having started out with a Kodak Instamatic when he was 12 years old. Although having successfully moved from the darkroom to the digital environment, he does still use a medium format film camera from time to time. He has been involved in and competed at local camera clubs since the 1970s and is the Competition Secretary and Vice Chairman of North Norfolk Photographic Society and a camera club judge on the East Anglian Federation of Photographic Societies circuit.

Although experimenting with many genres of photography his first love is monochromatic images that capture the light and atmosphere of the British landscape and also in photographing macro natural history subjects. He actively participates in national and international exhibitions.

A long-time member of Benfleet Camera Club and more recently The Beyond Group, I have always had a fascination for photography and in particular the printed image. I love the challenge of capturing that moment in time which would normally be a fleeting instant often missed in a blink of an eye, such as a bird taking off or a canoeist being swamped by water.

My photography is so much more to me than just taking the ‘competitive photograph’, in 2014 I started ‘Image Chasers’ a website where I could exhibit the images that I enjoyed capturing but may never see the light of day in a competition. Most of all it is also an escape, those quiet moments of contemplation either searching for an image or sat in a hide waiting for something to happen does wonders for my overall well-being.

Having learned so much from the Camera Club world, I wanted to pass on some of the knowledge I had learned (and am still learning all the time) to others and was invited to join the East Anglian Federation of Photographic Societies (EAF) judges’ panel in 2006. I try to assess what “drove” the photographer to take the picture and always enjoy seeing the work of others.

I travel extensively throughout East Anglia and surrounding areas, judging Club, inter-Club Competitions, and exhibitions. I have been a Member of the EAF Committee for 17 years and have held several positions on that Committee, including President and am currently Treasurer and exhibition Secretary. Yes – amateur photography and its associated administration are massively important parts of my life.

Jonathan is a photographer based in Bedford. He is a member and previous president of Cambridge Camera Club. He describes his photography as observational and has a great love of the coast. So, you either find him by the sea or, pre Covid, in a museum watching people walking up and down photogenic staircases.

Much of his work is multiple exposure and he works in set or groups of images than a single image.

An active member within the Camera Club circuit, attending competitions and exhibitions throughout the UK, along with volunteering for the Royal Photographic Society and a member of the East Anglian Federation Executive Committee, all help to keep him busy.

I’ve been a keen photographer ever since I pooled all my 21st birthday money to buy my first SLR, a Pentax ME Super that I still own. The move to digital back in 2002 opened up a whole new and wonderful world of creativity for me, and the number of burnt dinners that my family will happily accuse me of demonstrates how easily I lose time once I fire up PhotoShop. My recent images have mainly been landscape and nature, but I also shoot still life and portraits and work on composites and creative experiments — if it catches my interest, I’ll have a go (which saved my sanity during the recent lockdowns). I’m always interested to see how other photographers view the world, both to gain inspiration and to share ideas.

Though I started photography many years ago and have a strong darkroom background, my work these days is predominantly digital for convenience. My day job is in IT and so photography remains mostly a leisure pursuit though I do take it seriously. I am an active member of Cambridge Camera Club and lecture and judge at camera clubs throughout East Anglia and beyond.

If there is a genre I enjoy, it is street photography or photojournalism and I particularly enjoying capturing people in their natural environment. I also have a liking for monochrome photography and the two go together so well. Perhaps it is because we associate photojournalism with the gritty photographs seen in the newspapers years ago or the reportage work reproduced in the long defunct Picture Post magazine. Maybe it’s because monochrome can better portray a feeling or mood or perhaps it’s our imagination that makes a monochrome image what we want it to be without the colour of reality pre-empting our thoughts.

You will see a strong ‘people’ theme throughout my website. Though I enjoy most forms of photography from natural history to landscape, it’s still people that ticks the box for me. I make no excuse for it. People are all around us and it’s people that make the world go round.

Our eyes see many different things. Our minds see even more. Photography is an expression of what our mind sees in the world around us. It is a means of communication. It doesn’t matter whether the image really represents reality since it has already been interpreted, and changed to some degree, by film or electronics.

Who is to say whether what I see is any more reality than what you see? Unless the image is to be used in a court of law, the final image is what we wish others to see – our interpretation, our thoughts, our feelings, our communication, our individuality. Our Mind’s Eye.
